Using Art to Convey the Achievements of Biotechnology
Arlington, VA - July 24, 2008 Artistically gifted students from across the nation were recognized in Indianapolis last night for colorfully conveying the immense promise and achievements of biotechnology. The Lilly BioDreaming Poster Competition awards ceremony, held July 23 at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, culminated a national competition among K-12 students to create posters that illustrate biotechnology's potential to enhance human health, food supply, and the environment. The first-place winners are:
Named sponsor Eli Lilly and Company funded the competition, with additional funding provided by Dow AgroSciences. Indianapolis was chosen as the site of the awards ceremony to highlight the support of the Indianapolis-based sponsors. The Biotechnology Institute, the national biotechnology education organization, first implemented the competition in 2004. "We are thankful for the support of named sponsor Lilly and additional funder Dow AgroSciences," says Paul A. Hanle, president of the Biotechnology Institute "The support of our sponsors allows us to better recognize the enthusiasm these incredibly talented students have for biotechnology. The winners of the competition represent the very best of the next generation's awareness and appreciation of biotechnology." "Since introducing Humulin(r), the first product made through recombinant DNA technology, in 1985, Lilly has remained a leader in biotechnology with several other first-in-class medicines," said Dr. Steven Paul, Lilly's executive vice president of Lilly Research Laboratories. "Today, biopharmaceuticals make up more than 30 percent of Lilly's pipeline and represent important potential therapies for patients around the world. Lilly is proud to sponsor the BioDreaming Poster Competition, which helps young people understand the great promise of biotechnology to save and transform lives." "Imagination is at the heart of innovation, and it's exciting to see children using art to imagine the possibilities presented by biotechnology. In their eyes we can see the future, and it is one of endless possibility and dreams for agriculture, the industry feeding the world," says Jerome Peribere, president and CEO of Dow AgroSciences. Hundreds of K-12 students from across the United States submitted posters for the 2008 Lilly BioDreaming Poster Competition. The artwork of the top 12 finalists was displayed during the Biotechnology Institute's Conference on Biotechnology Education, which was held June 15-19 in San Diego, CA, MA, and during the subsequent BIO 2008 International Convention, where more than 20,000 convention attendees from around the world had the opportunity to view the posters. The posters are grouped into four grade categories: K-3rd grade, 4-6th grade, 7-9th grade, and 10-12th grade. First, second, and third place is awarded for each grade category. Winners receive prizes of $500, $250, and $100, respectively.
