Dow AgroSciences Congratulates Canada's Foodservice Sector on Eliminating Trans Fats and Lowering Saturated Fats

Omega-9 Oils responsible for removing 'bad fats' from Canadians' diets

Calgary, AB - July 21, 2008

Today’s release of the second set of data from Health Canada Trans Fat Monitoring Program (http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/nutrition/gras-trans-fats/index-eng.php ) shows that Canada’s foodservice industry continues to make progress to eliminate trans and lower saturated fat in the Canadian diet by the 2009 Health Canada deadline.

“Just over one year after the Health Minister called on the food industry to reduce trans and saturated fats, the industry has responded and many are doing so by changing the way they cook their food,” said David Dzisiak, Commercial Leader Oils at Dow AgroSciences.

Dow AgroSciences developed the Omega-9 Oils (www.Omega-9Oils.com ) category in 2006. Currently used by 60 per cent of Canadian restaurant chains referenced in the report, Omega-9 Oils are zero trans fat canola oils that also have the lowest level of saturated fat among the new trans fat alternatives.

“With less than 365 days left to meet the Health Canada timeline, foodservice ingredient costs rising dramatically and some food supplies becoming tight, we encourage those that haven’t yet removed trans fat from their menus to remember this — one of the easiest and most immediate things they can do is to change the oil they use in their kitchens,” added Dzisiak.

And, the canola industry is meeting the demand for new oil options. According to the Canola Council of Canada supply of canola for foodservice is on track to reach about 2 billion kilograms (4.6 billion pounds) by 2015. New canola oil products are also in development. For example, Dow AgroSciences and Martek Bioscience recently announced plans to develop and commercialize a canola seed that will produce an oil rich in omega-3 fatty acid, DHA. DHA supports brain, eye and cardiovascular health and nutritionists are now recommending that people increase their consumption of DHA as most consumers do not get enough in their diets today.
